Technicians from DISA were on site early Saturday morning to address the historic La Estrella petrol station in Puerto de la Cruz, following the collapse of one of the six emblematic roof structures the previous Friday, according to municipal sources.
The repair works involved stabilising the structure, securing the rest of the building – which is a designated Cultural Heritage asset (BIC), and erecting a perimeter fence as a precautionary measure.
It is expected that technicians from the Historical Heritage department of the Tenerife Island Council will visit the site on Monday to conduct a thorough assessment of the situation.
Authorities have confirmed that the petrol station, locally known as Punta de la Carretera, will remain closed until further notice.
A MASTERPIECE OF ARCHITECTURE
The La Estrella petrol station is a true architectural gem. Constructed in the early 1960s, it remains operational to this day and is listed in the municipal register of protected buildings, as well as being part of the Cultural Heritage designation of the historic centre of Porto.
The reason behind its extensive protection lies in its status as an architectural marvel. In fact, the design of La Estrella by Luis Cabrera Sánchez-Real earned it the prestigious Manuel Oráa Award from the College of Architects of the Canary Islands, recognising it as an engineering masterpiece and a showcase of innovative construction techniques and design aesthetics.
