The Canary Islands Government will expand the social housing options by constructing two blocks of 65 apartments in the San Antonio neighbourhood, La Orotava. This initiative aims to accelerate the availability of affordable housing options amidst the housing crisis in Tenerife, where rental availability has drastically decreased, and prices have skyrocketed.
The first stone for these two blocks, forming the San Antonio 1 housing complex, was laid on Thursday, adjacent to the already constructed San Antonio 2. Present at the event were the President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo; the Public Works Councilor of the regional government, Pablo Rodríguez; the President of Tenerife Island Council, Rosa Dávila; and the Mayor of La Orotava, Francisco Linares.
With views of the sea and the Teide and featuring two and three-bedroom apartments, these two blocks of 65 homes are being erected in a highly strained municipality, where rental options are scarce.
Clavijo praised the cooperation of the La Orotava City Council in advancing this development “at a time when we need to build new public housing for low-income families”.
On the other hand, Pablo Rodríguez stated that at present, the Government of Canary Islands, in collaboration with other authorities, is constructing around a thousand homes across all the islands. “We acknowledge the need for more housing construction, as the demand is very high, and we are fully committed to that effort,” he outlined.
