The Canary Islands’ Blood Donation and Hemotherapy Institute (ICHH) has issued an urgent appeal for blood donation from O+, O-, A+ and B+ blood groups, as their reserves have dropped to a critical level in recent days, affecting the blood supply in healthcare centres across the archipelago.
The Institute has urged the population to visit the various fixed and mobile blood donation points set up across the archipelago, not only for these specific blood groups but in general, as there is a threat of the reserves falling to critical levels across all blood groups.
At present, the O+, O-, A+ and B+ blood groups are at red alert level (urgent donation required), while A- and B- blood groups are at yellow alert level (donate in two or three days).
On the other hand, the AB+ and AB- blood groups have sufficient reserves and are currently at green alert level, as detailed by ICHH.
Mobile donation points hosted by ICHH on Monday are located in the town of Tigaday, Frontera (El Hierro), at the Las Rotondas shopping centre in Puerto del Rosario (Fuerteventura), as well as in the town centres of Gáldar and Carrizal de Ingenio in Gran Canaria and at the Pablo Montesinos institute in Las Palmas.
In Tenerife, there are mobile donation points at the San Isidro health centre in Granadilla de Abona, the El Trompo shopping centre in La Orotava, the main road in La Victoria de Acentejo, and at the Ofra barracks in San Cristóbal de La Laguna (for internal staff only).
The population also has access to fixed donation points at public hospitals on all the islands, as well as at certain private hospitals, specific health centres, and at the provincial blood banks in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
