One of the most anticipated events in this carnival edition, themed around television and named Dragnaval, took place for the first time in the festival’s history. Santa Cruz dedicated a space to the LGTBI community, specifically focusing on drag art, aiming to create a diverse Carnival.

The atmosphere was electrifying: a packed Plaza de la Candelaria eagerly awaited the arrival of Exuberancia Carey, the charismatic hostess of the event, to set the stage for what is promised to be one of the most eccentric and enjoyable Chicharrero Carnivals.

Following a tribute to local drag artists and a reference to the party’s theme, television, the evening kicked off with laughter from the host and former contestants of the Drag Race Spain format – Estrella Xtravaganza, Pupi Poisson and Samantha Balletines – as they were joined by various Carnival groups, including comparsas and murgas.

The judging panel consisted of Estrella Joel Ojeda, a journalist specialising in Carnival from DIARIO DE AVISOS; fashion designer Diego Filst; the esteemed drag queen Braulio; and the comedian Jessika Rojano, in her DragKing alter ego, Nick Cabrito.

Competing in the contest were drag performers Arkadia, Alexandra Devil, Virgen, Aqua Marina, Aythami Legendary, drag Purpurina, drag Nilo, Devora León, Eva Harrington, Isabella y Punto, Joel Peraza and Anastasia Letal, showcasing art, enjoyment, freedom and the true essence of Carnival.

As the clock struck midnight, after the captivating performances by Pupi Poisson and Samantha Balletines leading through the various segments of the competition, the winning drag was announced based on the applause from the enthralled audience, marking a memorable moment for the format.

The city’s Carnival grew significantly with this successful event, infusing it with freshness and imparting essential societal values. This event has the potential to become a regular fixture in the carnival programme.

Accolades

The top honours of the evening went to Drag Nilo, with Drag Virgen and Eva Harrington securing second and third place respectively.
