The Ports of Tenerife Concluded 2023 with 7 Million Travelers, the Second Highest Rate Nationwide

The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Port Authority closed the previous year in the second national spot for passenger traffic, with 7.1 million recorded, a 14% increase from 2022, as reported on Monday.

Out of the total, 5.5 million pertained to regular passengers and 1.1 million to cruise passengers, indicating positive growth rates of 7.7% and 45% consecutively, as outlined by the Port Authority.

Similarly, the ports in the Santa Cruz de Tenerife province led the country in vehicle movement based on passenger statistics, with 1.8 million units, an increase of 5.25% from the prior year.

Also, 16,568 commercial vessels were accounted for, positioning the province’s ports as the third largest in the nation.

Regarding general cargo movement, the Tenerife ports ascended one position compared to 2022, claiming the sixth rank with 8.2 million tons transported, similarly escalating two positions in fresh fish transport, with a 13% improvement from the previous year.

Likewise, the Santa Cruz de Tenerife port concluded 2023 with favorable results in most of its traffic, highlighting the 2.6 million registered passengers and 11.5 million tons transported in the port area, affirming its robustness and influence in island connectivity.

Out of these 2,694,013 million passengers, representing an 18.71% increase from 2022, 1,835,610 were attributed to regular transportation.

Furthermore, the number of cruise passengers arriving in Tenerife surged by over 50% in comparison to 2022, with 817,550 visitors to the capital, signifying the recovery of tourist activity post-COVID.

The figures related to goods movement also presented positive data, with a 10.12% total traffic increase, amounting to 11,525,555 million tons between January and December 2023.

These figures encompass general merchandise, with 6,521,937 tons and a 9.3% increase, as well as fuel supplies, which markedly surpassed 2022 figures with a significant 21.02% increase, reaching 542,261 tons, and liquid bulk, which grew by 15.15%.

Solid bulk, in line with the trend for most of the year, decreased by 9.42%, with 353,967 tons, 36,813 less than in 2022.

In terms of containerized goods, 3,760,800 million tons were recorded, marking an increase of 181,243 tons from 2022, translating to a 5.06% rise compared to the previous year.

This is also evident in the total number of containers, which increased by 4.15% in 2023.
