This Saturday, thousands of people gathered in the two Canary Islands capitals to express their repudiation of the “genocide” suffered by the Palestinian people, urging the Government of Spain to cut diplomatic ties with Israel and put an end to the “arms trade.” The protest, organized by the Solidarity Network against the Occupation of Palestine in more than one hundred Spanish cities, denounced the “massacre” faced by the Palestinian population.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the march began in the Plaza de La Puntilla and traveled along Las Canteras promenade to Luis Morote street. During the event, a manifesto was read and a music festival was held. Ángela Abu Quevedo, spokesperson for the organization present at the demonstration, shared concern about the situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, where families are “confined” due to “harassment” by settlers and the Israeli army.
Fátima Suleimán, president of the Palestinian Community in the Canary Islands, participated in the protest expressing her “helplessness” in the face of the events in Palestine. She called on the international community, as well as the governments of Spain and other countries, to stop these tragedies and allow her people to “live in peace and freedom.”
In the capital of Tenerife, more than a thousand people joined the demonstration under the slogan “Let’s stop the genocide in Palestine” and demanded an end to the “arms trade” and relations with Israel. The participants chanted slogans such as “It is not a war, it is a genocide” and “Israel murders, Europe sponsors.” The march toured the commercial area of the city, culminating with the reading of a manifesto. Similar concentrations took place in Lanzarote, Arrecife, La Palma and El Hierro.
