The mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, accompanied by the Councilor for Sports, Alicia Cebrián, today presented the third edition of the San Salitre Swimming Journey, which will take place on January 1, 2024 in the El Block bathing area, in Valleseco. On this occasion, this event, already consolidated in the capital’s sports calendar, will take place in a new location designed by the Sports Service of the capital’s City Council under the technical direction of Gesport Canarias and the collaboration of the Port Authority.

The presentation event took place this morning in the same El Block bathing area, in Valleseco, where the test will take place on January 1 at 11:30 am. Also present were the president of the Port Authority, Pedro Suárez, along with the councilor of the Anaga district, Gladis de León; the representative of the shipping company Fred.Olsen Express, Joan Padilla, as the main sponsor, and Ivo López, representing the company organizing the event, Gesport Canarias.

José Manuel Bermúdez began his appearance by congratulating Alicia Cebrián for having come up with this magnificent initiative, and noted that “the councilor proposed this idea to us a little over three years ago, something that was original for the first day of the year, and not the same type test in other places in the world”, and added that “we prefer to celebrate it by swimming, with a crossing like the San Salitre, in which I hope we will have the same time as today and with a high expected participation, since on the day of Today there are more than 300 registered.”

The Councilor for Sports, Alicia Cebrián, pointed out that “this test was born three years ago, with the purpose that everyone can play sports on the first day of the year, since it is a popular test, with participation for all ages.” In addition, she explained that “this is a swimming test open to federated and non-federated swimmers, which will take place on the first day of the year.” To which he added that “as a novelty there is also the first swim of the year modality, with a distance of 100 meters, in which anyone who is of legal age who shows up there can participate, in which some attire typical of the end of year partys”.

For his part, the president of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Pedro Suárez, stressed that “events like this allow us to continue collaborating with the city council to bring the citizens of Santa Cruz even closer to the port. “I consider it to be a magnificent idea, with a huge future, in an ideal space such as the El Block bathing area, which has been recovered from the port for the citizens.”

The San Salitre Swimming Journey consists of two distances: one of 1,000 meters and another of 2,000 meters. The maximum number of participants will be 300 swimmers distributed between the two modalities. And the minimum age for participation in the adult journey is 13 years old.

Children’s Journey

In addition, there will be a children’s crossing, starting at 11:00 a.m., with distances adapted to age: from 7 to 8 years (50 meters); from 9 to 10 years old (100 meters) and from 11 to 12 years old (200 meters), a participation that this year is greater than in previous editions and which has forced the organization to expand the number of places.

The 1,000 meter modality is scheduled to start at 11:30 am, and the 2,000 meter modality is scheduled to start at 11:40 am. While the first swim of the year will be from 12:30, also in the El Block bathing area.

Registration will remain open until tomorrow, Thursday, December 28, at 8:00 p.m., at the following link: https://inscriptions.chronotrackcanarias.com/inscripcion/iii-travesia-a-nado-san-salitre-santa-cruz-de-tenerife/.
