
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council, through the Autonomous Organization of Festivals and Recreational Activities (OAFAR), has commenced the registration period for the Typical Canary Islands Food Contest. The contest will be held on May 30th, Canary Islands Day, as part of the city’s founding celebrations. Registration is open until Friday the 17th.
The event will take place at the Alameda del Duque de Santa Elena from 12:00 to 14:00. Categories include Puchero Canario, Cherne with two mojos, wrinkled potatoes and kneaded gofio, Fish casserole, Rabbit in Salmorejo, desserts, liquors, New Canarian Cuisine, and the Competition Specialty. Participation is open to non-profit entities, neighbourhood associations, groups, folk groups, and individuals residing in the municipality dressed in traditional Canarian attire.
Contest rules require a minimum of 5 and a maximum of 10 participants. Each specialty should provide a minimum of 15 servings, excluding New Canarian Cuisine and Competition Specialty which requires only one serving for tasting. Dessert participants need to present a minimum of 2 dishes, while the Competition Specialty will feature compound chickpeas this year.
In the New Canarian Cuisine category, contestants are encouraged to present a dish of their own creation using Canarian ingredients but with a unique and innovative preparation. The jury will award three prizes per category, except for New Canarian Cuisine and Competition Specialty which will have a single winner.
