A cayuco in which 75 migrants were traveling, all of them sub-Saharan, arrived today Wednesday at the island of El Hierro escorted by the ‘Río Segura’ patrol boat of the Civil Guard after having left several days ago from somewhere on the sub-Saharan coast. as reported by Maritime Rescue sources.
The rescue operation began yesterday afternoon, Tuesday, when the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center received a notice from a sailboat reporting that they had sighted a boat with a considerable number of people about 150 miles southwest of Gran Canaria.
Maritime Rescue immediately activated the Sasemar 101 plane, which was joined early Wednesday morning by the Helimer helicopter, which was searching the area without success until a SIVE echo from the Civil Guard was detected about 5 miles south of the island of El Hierro.
The ‘Río Segura’ patrol boat of the Civil Guard moved to the area and finally intercepted the cayuco, in which 72 men, 2 women and 1 child were travelling, and escorted it to the La Restinga dock, where they were assisted by health personnel from the Civil Guard. SUC and Red Cross volunteers, without transfers to health centers.
