The territorial director of RTVE, José María García Mediano, highlights the “importance” of the existence of food banks is “indisputable” and adds that “thanks to the organizations that are in charge of collecting the products and then delivering them to the most needy, many families can survive.
The Solidarity Telemarathon, which will have collection points throughout the Archipelago, aims to mobilize, once again, the society of the Islands to help more than 40,000 people in situations of severe poverty through 228 non-governmental entities and organizations.
The largest solidarity initiative in the Canary Islands was born during the 2008 crisis in response to the extreme situation that the Canarians were experiencing and for more than 12 years it has been appealing to the generosity of the islanders to help the most vulnerable, because chronic poverty remains in the islands. In fact, 36% of the population – that is, 780,000 people, of which almost 377,000 are children and adolescents – are at risk of poverty and social exclusion, according to the report from the European Network to Fight Poverty and Social Exclusion.
The organization of the Solidarity Telemarathon will enable authorized collection points to make it easier for citizens to contribute their donations. The Web www.mirametv.com, the group’s social networks and the network’s special programming will update the list of said points. The chain makes available to groups, companies and entities that want to become collection points a telephone number (691 62 57 97) and an email (telemaraton@mirametv.com) to join the largest solidarity initiative in the Canary Islands.
In these 12 years, more than 70,000 people have participated in parades, parades, concerts and donations of the Solidarity Telemarathon, which has featured more than 190 hours of live broadcast.
