The Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands continues to develop the project for the third lane of the Southern Highway between San Isidro and Playa de The Americas. Specifically, the Oroteanda-Las Chafiras link, of which 85% of the 23.6 million euros budget has already been executed. The completion of this phase now exceeds the two-year delay over the 30 months contemplated in the award.
The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure, Francisco González, and the General Director of Road Infrastructure, Rosana Melián, supervised the progress of the works this Friday, after holding a meeting with the mayor of San Miguel de Abona, Arturo González; the CEO of Highways of the Island Council, Dámaso Arteaga, and representatives of the Círculo de Empresarios del Sur de Tenerife (CEST).
At the meeting, they detailed the different phases that are currently being undertaken and the expected deadlines for each of them, such as access to the Oroteanda link from Santa Cruz de Tenerife; the upper link of Chafiras, access to it from Las Américas, as well as an action in the Barranco de Archile.
This project, whose investment currently amounts to 23.6 million euroshas already executed 85% of its initial budget, paying the Government of Canary Islands until last October 18.9 million euros. The Department of Public Works plans to partially hand over the Oroteanda link to the Tenerife Council at the end of the first quarter of 2024. At the same time, it announces that it hopes to complete the work in the last quarter of next year.
The objective of this intervention is to solve the problem of traffic retention that is registered in the place due to the influx of vehicles that the Las Chafiras interchange registers, which generates great congestion there, on the branches and on the Southern Highway. (TF-1).
To this end, the project contemplates the remodeling of the Las Chafiras interchange, building a new one in Oroteanda and unidirectional collector-distributor roads between both points. The purpose is to guarantee connectivity with the trunk of the highway through uninterrupted traffic, explains the Department of Public Works.
