The mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, inaugurated the plaza yesterday Josefa Santiago Fernandez, located on Tazacorte street, in La Cuesta. With this gesture, the City Council wanted to dedicate this public space to the career of the president of the Romi Kamela Nakerar Gypsy Women Association.
The local councilor unveiled the new signage and plaque for this square, “as a memory and recognition of the excellent work carried out by the honoree in her defense of real equality of rights and opportunities for women and girls of the gypsy community, in pro of the city of La Laguna”, he highlighted.
“I have said on many occasions, and I will never tire of repeating it, that the greatest wealth of La Laguna, and its greatest heritage, is its people,” added Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, who also highlighted “the value of the citizens who work day in and day out.” day to move forward with his life and that of his family and who fights tirelessly to achieve a better future.”
The honoree thanked the City Council and its mayor for this recognition, which she dedicated to “all the brave gypsy women who have allowed me to be here.” Lastly, she also remembered all the people who have supported her in her work and daily work, starting with her parents and including her friends and the rest of her family.
The opening ceremony, which was also attended by the honoree, various councilors from the City Council and neighborhood representatives from the area, was enlivened by a musical performance by the flamenco group Los Pellizcos. Likewise, with this recognition action, the Lagunero City Council complies with the proposal approved in the municipal plenary session.
The Romi Kamela Nakerar Association of Gypsy Women was officially born on August 16, 1994 in the emblematic neighborhood of La Candelaria, in La Cuesta. Since then, its projects and activities are focused on improving the quality of life of the Roma community and their families.
