SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Oct. 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has announced that the Autonomous Budget of the Canary Islands 2024 will include an increase of 9.2% to compensate for the capital status of both Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.
This was said this Saturday after the meeting of the Capital Council that was attended by the mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, José Manuel Bermúdez, and by videoconference of the mayor of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Carolina Darias, to inform them about the preparation of the 2024 Autonomous Budget.
Clavijo pointed out that the increase in this item will allow the Tenerife capital to receive 3.71 million euros and the Gran Canaria capital 4.23 million.
He also explained that both mayors have conveyed that the concentration of population in the two capitals requires a more in-depth debate on the needs of these municipalities, which is why he showed the Government’s willingness to sit down and debate the peculiarities of the capitals.
Regarding the 2024 budget, the president pointed out that we are talking about a budget of about 11.3 billion euros that each department will then have to break down, understanding that we must continue agreeing and listening to the suggestions of both employers and unions.
For his part, the mayor of Santa Cruz has shown his satisfaction with this increase, while conveying to the Government of the Canary Islands the need for some municipalities such as the capital of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Laguna or Telde, which make up 40% of the Canarian population, are considered differently in the budgets.
“We understand that they have a different problem in social matters, in terms of housing, employment or poverty, which requires some different measures from the Government and also from the councils of Tenerife and Gran Canaria fundamentally,” he explained.
