Although in the Canary Islands, and specifically in Tenerife, unemployment increased during the month of August – with respect to the previous month, not in terms of the interannual figure -, in the South the trend was one of resistance, enduring the pull and managing to create employment, despite the growth of the active population. It is true that the creation of jobs was weak compared to the month of July, but, at the end of the day, it was an increase in a general panorama that marked the opposite trend. Thus, in the Archipelago as a whole, unemployment was 172,929 people. In Tenerife, for its part, it stood at 74,390 people. This means growth of 446 and 86 people, respectively. Although bad compared to July, these are positive figures compared to the same month of the previous year. In this comparison, unemployment in the Canary Islands was reduced by 9.1% and by 10.2% on the Island. By municipality, the trend was uneven. In this way, unemployment fell in eight municipalities and rose in four.

It decreased in Adeje, Arona, Granadilla de Abona, Arico, Candelaria, Fasnia, Santiago del Teide and Vilaflor. On the other hand, it rose in Guía de Isora, Arafo, Güímar and San Miguel de Abona. By municipalities, Adeje was one of the municipalities that led the creation of jobs, which allowed unemployment to fall by 51 people compared to the month of July, 2.3% -and 15.6% compared to the year 2022-, and the number of unemployed people was 2,144. Arico deserves a special mention, where unemployment decreased in August compared to July by 3.7% -24 people less- and there are currently 617 people unemployed, a drop of 10.6% compared to the previous year. same month of the previous year.

In Candelaria unemployment fell by 1.4% compared to July and 13.1% compared to that month of 2022, standing at 1,867 people, according to official data collected by the Canary Islands Employment Observatory (Obecan). In Arona and Granadilla de Abona the decreases in unemployment were more timid. In the first of the two, it fell 0.4% compared to the previous month, although it fell 13% year-on-year, which means that 24 people left the unemployment lists, for a total of 5,447. Granadilla de Abona and Guía de Isora The figures for Granadilla de Abona are very similar to those recorded by Arona. In this case, the total number of unemployed stood at 3,663 people in July, 22 less than in July, which means percentages of 0.6% compared to July and 12.8% compared to the same month of the year. last year.

Unemployment also decreased by 0.9% in Fasnia; 1.3%, in Santiago del Teide, and 2.5%, in Vilaflor. On the contrary, it increased in Guía de Isora (1.8% compared to July), Arafo (0.9% more), San Miguel de Abona (3% more) and in Güímar, where it increased by 0.2%. % if the data is compared in relation to July of this year. Signed contracts Adeje was the absolute leader in July in terms of the number of contracts signed in the entire Southern region, with 3,692, according to figures made public by Obecan. However, this figure represents a drop of 20.3% compared to the same month in 2022. In Arona, 2,428 contracts were signed (-6% compared to July and -16.1% compared to 2022), while in San Miguel de Abona there were 756, with an increase both in July and last year.
