The Cabildo de Tenerife and volunteers contribute to the recovery of the Agua García forest

The Council of Tenerifethrough the Office for Environmental Participation and Volunteering, has recently collaborated in an activity to eradicate invasive exotic flora in the Agua García forest in which about twenty volunteers took part.

The activity was organized by the Association of Friends of the Agua García Forest and the Nivaria Mountaineers Club and had the support of the Tenerife Island Mountaineering Federation, the Tacoronte City Council and the Cabildo Environmental Volunteer Office.

The island directors of Natural Environment and Waste, Pedro Millán and Alejandro Molowny, took part in the activity, which consisted of a knowledge itinerary of the Agua García forest in which the natural, ethnographic and cultural heritage was valued of this natural space located in the Protected Landscape of Las Lagunetas. In addition, a control of invasive exotic plants such as cat’s ear (Tradescantia fluminensis), Cape cockerel (Chasmanthe aethiopica), German ivy (Delairea odorata), among others, was carried out.

The purpose of these actions is promote and support the rehabilitation of this protected natural space according to criteria, orientation and needs. As well as, involving volunteers in the recovery of this forest environment, promoting the commitment of the local population in the conservation of this forest. The activity is included in a sponsorship project for natural spaces called ‘Monte de Agua García: a place to conserve’, which is supported by SEO/BirdLife in alliance with Ecoembes since 2019.

The Office of Environmental Participation and Volunteering carried out different actions throughout the year such as collection of abandoned waste, species recognition workshops, control of exotics and itineraries of different themes. Different entities such as educational centers, associations and companies participate in them through corporate social responsibility (CSR).
