He Council of Tenerife has taken control of Arafo fire which began on Saturday afternoon and has affected some 30 hectares of scrubland, scrub and grass, also affecting candlemas.

The 50 people who were preventively evicted yesterday afternoon have been authorized to return to their homes.

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, has thanked the work of all the people and entities that have participated in the work to extinguish the fire, as well as the collaboration of the Arafo, Candelaria and Güímar Town Halls.

Dávila has asked the population to take extreme precautions in activities that can generate a fire

A hundred people have participated in the extinction work during the two days, with the support of two helicopters from the Cabildo and one from the Government of the Canary Islands.

The forest brigades of the Cabildo (Brifor), personnel from the Tenerife Fire Consortium, volunteer firefighters from Valle de Güímar have participated, and the local police forces of Arafo, Candelaria and Güímar have collaborated, as well as Civil Protection personnel from the three municipalities.

The fire started on Saturday the 15th below the area of the Mirador de Chivisaya and spread rapidly due to the wind that affected the area.

The extinction efforts were initially concentrated on safeguarding some houses near the fire, for which several roads were cut and the preventive eviction of fifty people and two hundred head of cattle.

During Saturday night, work was done to prevent the fire from spreading to an adjoining ravine on the right flank and at the head of the fire, as well as to preserve the homes.

In the early hours of Sunday, the two Cabildo helicopters carried out various drops on hot spots of the fire, while the Brifor ground personnel continued with the extinction work until the fire was controlled.

The Cabildo recalls that grade 2 measures are activated, which prohibits making fires in recreational areas, camping areas and campsites, burning agricultural or forest residues and bonfires.

Work with machinery or tools is prohibited, as well as the use of elements that can generate sparks in agricultural or forest areas, such as brushcutters and welding equipment.

Forest harvesting, hunting activity throughout the island, the circulation of motor vehicles on the network of forest tracks for recreational purposes, or sporting events and pilgrimages on tracks and forest trails and off-road are not allowed.
