The Cabildo de Tenerife has approved in the Governing Council the contracting file for the execution of the remodeling works of the Plaza de la Patrona and its surroundings, in the municipality of Candelaria.
The island’s acting president, Pedro Martín, has explained that the Cabildo will finance the works, for an amount of 19 million euros, a figure that represents 5 million more in relation to the initial budget, which will be made effective on a multiannual basis, in parallel to the development of the different phases of the project.
Pedro Martín has indicated that this project is possible thanks to the joint work carried out from the different areas of the Cabildo, the Candelaria City Council and the Insular Water Council.
He added that after the summer it is expected that the adjudication can be resolved and work begin, which will be carried out in three phases: the promenade (3,431 square meters), the Plaza de la Patrona (13,640 square meters) and the Plaza of the Artisans (2,354 square meters). In addition, the project also contemplates the improvement of hydraulic pipelines and sanitation in this space.
“With this very important action we fulfill a historical debt with the Candelaria City Council and with the citizens, to build a new space in this symbolic place for Tenerife, one of the most visited on the island as a permanent place of pilgrimage, which required this acting,” he said.
The mayoress of Candelaria, Mari Brito, has expressed her satisfaction that this “so longed for” project is “finally a reality after years of intense work between the administrations”. “Today we can say that Candelaria will soon have the project it needs and deserves for one of the most emblematic and visited places in the Canary Islands, the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias”, she highlighted.
The action will occupy a total area of action 19,425 m2. The financing will be done on an annual basis, given the magnitude of the works and the cost involved in their execution. In total, the budget has been divided into four annual installments: 2023, 1,662,000 euros; 2024, 8,533,655 euros; 2025, 7,915,980 euros, and 2026, 918,313 euros.
