Bermúdez is re-elected mayor of Santa Cruz de Tenerife with the support of the five PP councilors

holy cross of Tenerife already has a mayor. Everything has gone according to plan. the nationalist Jose Manuel Bermudez has been re-elected this Saturday, June 17, first mayor of the chicharrera capital with the support of the popular. The City Council was constituted smoothly thanks to the covenant established between Canarian Coalition (CC) and the Popular Party (PP) just five days after the municipal electionsheld on May 28.

In a Plenary Hall full of publicamong relatives, numerous authorities and the media, and in which the heat declared war on the clothing marked by the protocol, José Manuel Bermúdez was proclaimed mayor after obtaining nine votes from CC councilors and five from PP, as had already been agreed. In this way, Bermúdez faces his fourth term as head of the Chicharrero Consistory.

The mayor and his nationalist team, made up of Gladis de León, Alfonso Cabello, Rosario González, José Alberto Díaz-Estébanez, Evelyn Alonso (independent), Javier Rivero, Purificación Dávila and Javier Caraballero, breathed easythis time without feeling the anguish caused by not knowing what is going to happen. And the leader of the PP, Carlos Tarife, already first deputy mayor, looked at his companions, the rest of the popular councillors, Zaida González, Alicia Cebrián, Santiago Díaz and Carmen Pérez, with the satisfaction of having managed to be the key to governability. in the town of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

In the seats of the opposition, the three new councilors of VOX, Alejandro Gómez, Luis de los Reyes-Sosa Tolosa del Valle and Juan Manuel Hermoso, and the ten councilors of the PSOE, Patricia Hernández, Elena Mateo, Florentino Guzmán Plasencia, Matilde Zambudio (independent), Andrés Martín, Alana Chinea, José Sabaté, Mónica Brito, Antonio Rodríguez and Ana Delia Darias. The great absence was, without a doubt, that of the socialist José Ángel Martín. The one who was number two on the PSOE list resigned from all his posts after being arrested, three days before the elections, for an alleged assault on a director of the Club de Soccer of the board.

On May 28, the PSOE, led by Patricia Hernández, won the elections in the Chicharrero municipality for the first time in the history of democracy. He did it with a difference of 1,113 votes and ten councilors, getting one more than in 2019. Even so, Hernández had a very difficult time, since CC, with nine councilors (one less than in the previous elections), and the PP, with five ( two more than in 2019), added a majority, the 14 councilors needed to govern. In addition, they were already directing the Consistory together, so it was only a question of reissuing the pact if the appropriate conditions were met, as they were.

With the disappearance of Ciudadanos (Cs) and Unidas Podemos (UP) in Santa Cruz, and with the entry of VOX, Patricia Hernández was left alone to form a government. With the PP, an agreement was practically impossible, because Tarife had already announced during the electoral campaign that he would not agree with the left. With CC, it was totally unfeasible, due to the more than evident enmity between Hernández and Bermúdez.

early deal

Only five days after the elections, the nationalists and the popular had reached an agreement, which was signed on June 3, reissuing the pact between both formations. Bermúdez and Tarife pointed out that the agreement is linked to a program of government inspired by “stability” and “moderation”, as a “response to sectarianism and partisan extremism that other formations have represented in the capital”.

This pact has handed over to the PP the Development Society, one of the key pieces of the capital’s City Council, and Culture, which are added to the areas they already had, among which are Public Services, Urban Planning, Animal Welfare and Sports. CC will continue to be in charge of Infrastructures, Finance, Housing, Heritage, Security, Mobility and Parties, among other areas.

In the plenary session of constitution of the Consistory, the agreement signed on June 3 between CC and the PP became effective. The new government of the capital is already formed, in which 40% of its councilors are new faces. José Alberto Díaz-Estébanez has joined the Bermúdez team, although he is already a veteran of the chicharrero Town Hall, and Javier Caraballero. And to the PP are added Zaida González, who was already mayor of Santa Cruz in the 2015-2019 term, Santiago Díaz and Carmen Pérez.

Unanswered

After the harsh words of the PSOE spokesperson, Patricia Hernández, the mayor, who chose not to answer him, assured during his speech that his government team will work until “exhaustion” so that Santa Cruz “reaffirms its leadership on the Island”, to improve the quality of life of all chicharreros, in all neighborhoods, and to transform the city.

He recalled the “moments” experienced in 2020, when CC, PP and the councilor of Cs Evelyn Alonso presented the motion of no confidence to wrest the Mayor’s office from the socialist Patricia Hernández, who had achieved it with the support of the councilors of Cs Matilde Zambudio ( now in the PSOE as an independent) and Juan Ramón Lazcano (who resigned), after an election, those of 2019, which Bermúdez had won.

In this sense, the once again mayor of the capital pointed out that, at that time, a government was started “whose action is based on three pillars: stability, attention to people and collective reconstruction”, in which, he assured, “we will continue working” on this mandate.

This is how the residents of Santa Cruz de Tenerife voted in the municipal elections in each neighborhood and each street
