Yesterday, the prominent La Concepción parish in the capital of Tenerife held a moving ceremony in remembrance of Antonio Gutiérrez de Otero and Santayana González-Varona, the valiant hero of the Battle of July 25, 1797, whose remains are interred in the aforementioned church.
On the occasion of the 225th anniversary of the passing of this distinguished general, the event saw the presence of various local authorities, alongside members of the Tertulia Amigos del 25 de Julio and the La Gesta Cultural Association, who paid tribute to the memory of this military leader, who stood ready to defend the Islands during Spain’s conflicts with France and England. From July 22 to 25, 1797, Santa Cruz de Tenerife witnessed one of its most illustrious moments in history: the triumphant victory of the city against the English fleet under the command of Admiral Horacio Nelson.
