More public support for disease research, new treatments to find a definitive cure and automatic recognition of 33% of the degree of disability with the diagnosis to facilitate access to benefits and resources and significantly improve the quality of life of the people affected. These are the main demands of the Tenerife Association of Multiple Sclerosis (Atem) expressed by those responsible on the world day of this disease.
The Council of Tenerife hosted this Monday the reading of a manifesto on the occasion of the World Multiple Sclerosis Day to raise awareness about the situation of people affected by this disease and make their demands visible, in an act organized by Atem.
The collective also demanded access to a Comprehensive, personalized, free and continuous rehabilitation treatment, reinforcing the role that patient associations develop in this field; greater equality in access to the pharmacological treatment that each person requires and continuity in the collaboration of the pharmaceutical industry in supporting associations and in the investigation of increasingly effective treatments.
The Multiple Sclerosis Association of Tenerife completed its requests requesting a greater commitment from companies in the adaptations of jobs and the compliance with the 2% required by law in hiring people with disabilities, as well as more support from public administrations towards families and a greater commitment to universal accessibility, “so necessary for equal opportunities and non-discrimination of people with disabilities”, stressed the association. The vice president of Atem, Patricia Santana, was in charge of reading the manifesto. She appealed “to the commitment and solidarity with people who suffer from multiple sclerosis and their families, who are their main caregivers.” The association also set up an information table outside the Cabildo de Tenerife headquarters this Monday morning to raise public awareness and inform society about the disease. As a show of support, the Cabildo de Tenerife illuminated its facade in green this Monday afternoon.
The Councilor for the Presidency and Finance of the Tenerife Corporation, Berta Pérez, pointed out during the ceremony that “a day like this is very important to raise awareness among citizens.” “Tenerife has always distinguished itself for its solidarity and in the face of diseases such as multiple sclerosis we have to continue supporting the families and people who suffer from it, from the administrations and the different sectors, in a real and effective way”, concluded Berta Pérez.
