The increase in maritime passenger traffic during the days of Easter in the port of Los Cristianos becomes every year “a real nightmare for the residents, who see how the tourist city collapses, due to port activity”, for Lope Afonso, candidate of the Popular Party (PP) for the presidency of the Cabildo de Tenerife, calls for “urgent action by the administrations, to avoid the collapse suffered by the port and the entire Los Cristianos road system, directly caused by the inter-island passenger traffic activity”.
Lope Afonso recalls that “this is a historical demand of the residents of this tourist city, who suffer from serious traffic problems, including heavy vehicles circulating through Los Cristianos, as a result of port activity.” During a visit to Arona, Afonso alluded to the port of Fonsalía, which “was called to replace Los Cristianos in passenger traffic between islands, so that Los Cristianos could become a tourist, sports and fishing port.”
In fact, as the Popular Party candidate for the presidency of the Cabildo recalls, “in the insular institution there has been a debate about the need to promote a port in Fonsalía since the 1990s, and the project was promoted during the last years, with all the blessings of the then mayor of Guía de Isora, Pedro Martín, who demanded that this infrastructure be a priority for supra-municipal administrations”.
However, during this term, “Pedro Martín himself allowed the environmental impact study of this project to expire, condemning Tenerife and the Islas Verdes to the collapse of communications between the islands of our province.”
Fátima Lemes bets on beautifying the cores of Arona
The candidate of the PP in Arona, Fátima Lemes Reverón, is committed to an urban and landscape beautification plan in the nuclei of the municipality, “a priority objective after verifying the negligence of the local government.” After visiting the neighborhoods of the municipality and holding meetings with the neighbors, Lemes found that many of the complaints are “repetitive and common” and regretted that “the Government of Mena has been more busy with internal power battles than working for the well-being of Arona”.
