Palm Sunday officially inaugurated yesterday the celebration of Holy Week 2023, an encounter with faith without masks or restrictions of any kind. He did it accompanied by good weather, the same one that encouraged believers to participate in the multiple processions that dotted the insular geography, and that took place after the traditional blessing of the hearts of palm. The celebration of the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem was repeated in multiple parishes. Among the most representative was the one presided over by the bishop, Bernardo Álvarez, in La Laguna, in the Monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, where he performed the traditional blessing of the palms and olive trees. Next, the solemn procession of Ramos took place to the Cathedral, where the Eucharist of the day was celebrated, in which, on this occasion, the Passion according to Saint Matthew was proclaimed.
In the homily, according to the Bishopric, Bernardo Álvarez invited to give thanks, after reading the passion, because everything that has been narrated has happened “for us and for our salvation.” The Nivarian prelate urged those present in the temple to focus their attention on the different characters of the Passion, to be able to experience it in the first person.
At the end of the mass, the procession took place, accompanied by the Brotherhood of the Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem and Christ the Preacher.
Likewise, the neighborhood of La Cuesta lived its particular Palm Sunday, with the premiere of a small carving of Jesus entering Jerusalem, in the procession of the Borriquita, and designed to be transported by boys and girls, as explained from the Brotherhood of María Santísima de los Dolores. Several parishes of Santa Cruz also celebrated the blessing of branches and their procession, such as that of La Concepción or that of San Francisco de Asís, among others.
In the north of Tenerife, in Puerto de la Cruz, the Señor de la Burrita procession through the streets of the old town, as in La Orotava, where the Palm Sunday procession took place in the Salesian College, with the Lord of the Burrito as the protagonist. In southern municipalities such as Adeje, the blessing of the hearts of palm took place in the Plaza de La Cruz del Llano, and the procession started from the parish of Santa Úrsula Mártir. In Candelaria, the basilica hosted the blessing of the branches and the procession around the square.
Today, Holy Monday, the image of the Lord of the Garden will go out in procession, in different points, such as La Laguna or Santa Cruz, the latter city where the Lord of Humility and Patience will also go out in procession.
