Ana Zurita is the new candidate of the Popular Party (PP) for Mayor of La Laguna for the upcoming May elections. This was confirmed yesterday by the president of the PP of the Canary Islands and candidate for the Presidency of the Government, Manuel Domínguez, during the presentation ceremony, where he stressed that Ana Zurita “has a lot of experience in politics and is the best candidate for such an important city ”.
“We are aware that this is not an easy place, that here we must continue working hard,” he said, accompanied by the candidate for the Cabildo, Lope Afonso; the president of the PP of Tenerife, Emilio Navarro, and the spokesman for the PP in La Laguna, Manolo Gómez.
For her part, Ana Zurita stated that for her it was “a great honor to be able to represent my city and be the next mayoress of La Laguna.” “And I will respond with rigor, work, seriousness and efficiency, and always at the service of the lagoons,” she stressed. The candidate herself maintained that La Laguna is no longer “the insular reference that it was” and she opted to “return to being a reference” and to value the University.
Likewise, he criticized that the municipality “does not progress economically, it has not been PGO since 2004, there is no clear development strategy, because they have been cowardly governments that have not dared”, as well as the housing problem that exists, “when there are three million square meters of undeveloped developable land”. And he announced that “we are going to dare and La Laguna is going to have its general planning.”
He also advocated “recovering the balance” and that “there are no differences between the center and the neighborhoods.” Zurita also indicated that “bad times are coming and our municipality has to be prepared, what is there is not enough, we have to contribute much more,” he added. “We want something more for our city, and this time the PP is going to come to stay”, he concluded.
Deputy in Congress
The candidate is currently a deputy in Congress, and in previous terms she was a councilor in the Santa Cruz City Council and a councilor in the Cabildo. Ana Zurita replaces Manolo Gómez, candidate in 2019 and current spokesperson for the PP in La Laguna, whom Domínguez thanked for his “effort and generosity”.
Asked if he will be part of the Laguna list, he replied that the lists are not yet made up and that the candidate’s proposal will have to be heard, although he pointed out that “Manolo will continue to be part of the PP in that place that he considers.”
Also consulted about the decision to change the candidate, Manuel Domínguez indicated that “it is an intense, long and thoughtful debate” and that “the only thing we have pursued is to get it right and that happens to have the best results for the formation.”
Regarding red lines to agree, he pointed out that “there is only one and it is that of not dealing with those who believe that tourism is a threat to the economy, Podemos.”
