La Victoria makes it easy for residents to make their own organic fertilizer

The City Hall of La Victoria de Acentejo and the council of Tenerife They make it easier for the residents of the municipality to make their own ecological fertilizer with organic waste. The creation of a community composting point achieves the initial involvement of 63 families from the municipality that will transform part of the waste from your home into a fertilizer for orchards and gardens. The initiative has a budget of €264,000.

The project to create a community composting point has also had the participation of 21 people receiving training and gaining paid work experience. In this team there are environmental educators, masons and agricultural and construction laborers. The mayor vitorio, Juan Antonio Garcia Abreu (PSOE)emphasizes that «we are talking about the use of organic remains for the production of compost that will be used for community use. we all win, since this will allow the City Council to save on the purchase of fertilizers for green areas and municipal gardens, and the neighbors will be able to take it home to fertilize their plants and domestic crops. But, above all, the environment will win, by diverting less garbage and avoid the use of chemical fertilizers that damage the soil».

This program provides for the construction of three municipal compost bins, of which one is already operational. As of this week, residents who wish to can deposit their organic waste at this point. At the moment, a total of 63 families from Vitora have already joined this initiative, “a number that will increase as the project becomes known,” explains the mayor.

The Consistory is in charge of delivering the buckets for the deposit of waste at home, at the same time that it carries out explanatory sessions on what compost is, what it is used for, what organic remains must be separated for its preparation, and how the area will work of vermicomposting. This program takes place in the farm El Pinaron a surface of 500 square meterswhere three spaces have been enabled: the area of vermicompstaje, where the three large municipal compost bins are located; a community garden of aromatic herbs, and a zone of recovery of the vegetation of the thermophilic forest.

The garden will serve to “create the necessary community feeling and citizen participation, since anyone who wishes can both plant new aromatic plants and take home the ones they need, “according to the Government of Vitorio. The recovery of vegetation from the thermophilic forest will help to recover the disappeared biodiversity of the area, attracting pollinating insects that contribute to the growth of new autochthonous flora and, with it, to achieve a better balance in the environment, which will favor the pest control.
