SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 22 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Cabildo has inaugurated this Thursday the Interpretation Center of the Sea and Fisheries of Tenerife, a permanent exhibition space that aims to inform and raise awareness among citizens about the characteristics of artisanal fishing in Tenerife, make visible the local natural heritage and promote the conservation of the marine resources and their ecosystems.
The Interpretation Center, located in the Punta del Hidalgo Tourist Information Office, in La Laguna, is a pioneering awareness project on the island, financed by the Cabildo de Tenerife, managed by the Coastal Action Group and with the collaboration of the City Council of La Laguna.
The Island Councilor for Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, Javier Parrilla, explained that this space “will be a meeting point for visitors and tourists, and will allow us to value our fishing sector, our traditions and our cultural heritage, but it will also contribute to raising awareness about importance of our coast and our sea”.
The special characteristics of the sea in Tenerife, the differences between industrial and artisanal fishing, human damage to the marine environment and what we can do to avoid it “or our proposal to declare two Marine Reserves of Fishing Interest on the island, are some of the issues that we will make known in this space,” added the island official.
Javier Parrilla valued the work carried out by the Coastal Action Group and pointed out that it is a renovated facility that works entirely with clean energy. In this sense, he indicated that, in addition to the exhibition space, this initiative “also includes traveling talks throughout the island and to all kinds of groups.”
For the mayor of La Laguna, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, “the creation of this space comes to enrich the tourist offer of the lagoon coast and to disseminate the unquestionable environmental values of our coast, promoting knowledge and protection of biodiversity and vindicating the role of our fishing sector. We value the close and continued collaboration with the Cabildo when it comes to implementing projects that materialize our commitment to the natural environment and its conservation”.
For her part, the Councilor for Tourism, Idaira Afonso, assured that this initiative is “clearly aligned with the commitment to sustainability that focuses the municipal tourism strategy, focused on the visibility and defense of the natural, rural and marine values of the region northeast”. It is, therefore, that “residents and visitors learn more about our landscapes and traditions, because knowledge is essential to promote their defense, protection and care.”
The inauguration ceremony was also attended by the Island Councilor for Natural Environment Management and Security, Isabel García; the Councilor for Beaches and Pools of the La Laguna City Council, Cristina Ledesma, and the person in charge of Rural Development, Aitor López.
