SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Dec. 1 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The Governing Council has authorized this Thursday, at the request of the Minister of Public Works, Transport and Housing, Sebastián Franquis, the expenditure of 14,959,636 euros to be able to start next year the tender for the improvement and reordering works of the Port of Agaete , on the island of Gran Canaria, a facility included in the network of Puertos Canarios.
The counselor explained that this project seeks to modernize these facilities and, at the same time, promote an improvement in the urban and social relationship between Villa de Agaete and the Las Nieves port facilities through a comprehensive urban intervention.
The port of Agaete is one of the most important within the network of ports of the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands because it usually moves more than one million passengers and 400,000 vehicles a year, and because its strategic location is essential for the connection of the islands of Gran Canaria and Tenerife.
The scope of action of this project will cover 42,000 square meters and in no case will works to expand docks or the port be undertaken that imply reclaiming land from the sea.
To this end, the projected action will focus on recovering the port public space that is now underused, giving continuity to the promenade that runs from the Old Dock to the new port in a U-shaped intervention creating a new pedestrian axis.
Inside the port, the height of the dock will be modified, raising it one meter above the current level, which would make it possible to overcome the difference in height between the port area and the promenade of Puerto de Las Nieves in front of the Brotherhood.
With this leveling of slopes, a large platform will be created that would house a new public square where today traps and fishing tackle are stacked, a promenade area that will also be able to host festive events, taking advantage of large spaces that are currently underused.
Another of the important actions to be undertaken in the port environment is focused on gaining more space on the quay by moving the current breakwater shoulder, which frees up more than 6,000 square meters in the current buffer zone.
Thanks to this liberated space, the waiting area for the ship will be substantially improved, which will be expanded with two new stopping areas for nearly 200 cars.
