Kirian Rodríguez Concepción, a footballer from the Las Palmas Sports Union, who is currently on leave due to cancer treatment, was the main protagonist of the sport recognition ceremony in Candelaria. The mayor, Mari Brito, announced the awarding to the player of the municipality’s Medal of Sports Merit, the first to be awarded after the approval of the new Honors and Distinctions regulation just a day before in plenary session.

Mari Brito thanked Kiriam, who was part of the Municipal Soccer School, for his participation in this event, whom she highlighted, in addition to his professionalism, his values, his way of facing difficulties and his optimism. An emotional Kirian recalled his childhood in the municipality, thanking the City Council for the invitation and pointing out the importance of enjoying every moment of the sport, winning, drawing or losing, and recalled the 87 days he had not played since he was diagnosed with the disease.

The recognition of the athletes and teams of the municipality was made according to the following criteria: first, second or third classified in championships of an insular, regional, national or international nature, both for individual athletes and for clubs, as well as those selected at the regional level. or national. The achievements of the last three seasons were awarded, since it was not done before due to COVID-19.
