The Popular Party asks the Cabildo to adopt “urgently”, in collaboration with the Government of the Canary Islands and the municipalities, actions to eliminate the plague of mexican cochineal which, he assures, is “uncontrolled” throughout the south of the island, “destroying the prickly pears in rural and urban environments.”
The island councilor of the PP, Valentín González Évora, explained that the situation demands urgent action to solve a problem that “concerns farmers, neighbors and businessmen throughout the region, since this introduced pest not only kills the prickly pears, but also It also causes unhealthy situations in the places where it is located, with strong odors and the presence of a large number of insects.”
Given this circumstance, the Popular Party in the Cabildo proposes that the island institution urge the Government of the Canary Islands and the Island Councils, so that, imminently, concrete actions are carried out to control the expansion and eradication of the plague of Mexican cochineal in public and private spaces, through advisory programs by technicians from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, and enabling a line of economic aid to meet the expenses derived from these actions.
