The Cross port, this Sunday and yesterday, within the Great Festivities of July, it once again celebrated with devotion the faith that this city professes to the Great Power of God, whose image returned to procession through the streets of Porto after three years without being able to do so due to the pandemic . Today is the great day of the Carmen boat.
Both in the procession on Sunday night, after the solemn mass, and yesterday’s thanksgiving in which the Choir of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the military band of the 49th infantry regiment of Tenerife took part, hundreds of people from Porto and Visitors greeted the passage of El Viejito, as the image of the Great Power of God is popularly known. Accompanied by the brothers of the brotherhood, the central streets of the tourist city once again vibrated like never before as a prelude to the maritime-terrestrial procession on Tuesday, which will have as protagonists the other two images that are venerated in the city, such as the Virgin of the Carmen and San Telmo.
Starting at nine in the morning today, Porto residents and visitors will be able to enjoy the acts on the occasion of the festival of the Virgen del Carmen. Thus, the Eucharist in honor of the patron saint of sailors will be celebrated in the city’s own fishing dock.
It will be at 5:30 p.m. when the mass begins in honor of the Virgin of Carmenso that, an hour later, at half past six in the afternoon, the procession will begin that will take the Virgin to the fishing dock for her embarkation and start of the maritime-terrestrial procession, in which she will be accompanied by the image of San Telmo.
Starting from the church square, you will go through the streets Quintana, Santo Domingo, La Marina (Boat), Mequinez, Plaza Benito Pérez Galdós, La Peñita, El Lomo, Villanueva, San Felipe, Plaza del Charco, La Marina (Pyrotechnic Exhibition) , Plaza del Charco, Blanco, Iriarte, San Juan and Quintana. At the end of the procession there will be a fireworks display.
For the brotherhoods, this 2022 means recovering the devotion that is lived in the streets of the city with the processions of El Viejito and the Virgen del Carmen. “Without a doubt, it is a very special year to see again those hundreds of people who congregate along the usual route of the Great Power of God and that shared feeling that honors us as a Brotherhood,” explained brother Sebastián Márquez. Likewise, the recently recovered Brotherhood of the Virgen del Carmen opens in 2022.
