SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE/MADRID, July 4. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Canary Islands received 883,472 international tourists in May, which was 447.45 percent more than the same month last year, when 161,380 foreign tourists arrived on the Islands, according to data published this Monday by the National Institute of Statistics ( INE).

The total expenditure made by international tourists who visited the Canary Islands in May reached 1,225 million euros, which represents an increase of 447.48% compared to the same month in 2021.

Between January and May, the expenditure of international tourists has stood at 6,921 million euros, 820.46 percent more than in the same period of the previous year, while the number of tourists arriving in the Islands was 4.8 million, 810.38 percent more.

At a national level, Spain received the visit of 7 million international tourists in May, multiplying by more than five the figure for the same month last year (+411.1%), when 1.4 million foreign tourists arrived in the country.

The total expenditure made by international tourists who visited Spain in May reached 8,023 million euros, which represents an increase of 474.8% compared to the same month in 2021.

With this new rise in May, the arrival of international tourists and their spending in Spain has accumulated twelve consecutive months of year-on-year increases.

The average expenditure per tourist increased by 12.5% ​​year-on-year in May, reaching 1,152 euros, while the average daily expenditure grew by 25.7%, to 177 euros.

The United Kingdom was the main issuing country in May, with almost 1.7 million tourists and an increase of 3,128.2% compared to May 2021. Germany and France were the next countries with the most tourists who visited Spain. Specifically, Germany contributed 975,241 tourists, while France contributed 925,994 visitors, almost three times more than in May 2021 in both cases.

Among the rest of the countries of residence, the annual growth of tourists from Ireland (2,488.8%), the United States (2,015.2%) and the Nordic countries (719.4%) should be highlighted.

The main issuing countries in terms of the level of spending in May are the United Kingdom (with 21.6% of the total), Germany (13.5%) and France (8.8%).

The expenditure of tourists residing in the United Kingdom increased by 2,858.4% in the annual rate, that of those from Germany by 201.1% and that of those from France by 227.7%.

During the first five months of the year, international tourist spending has multiplied almost eightfold (+690%) compared to the same period in 2021, reaching 26,776 million euros. Between January and May, the number of international tourists arriving in Spain exceeded 22.7 million, 609.3% more than in the first five months of last year.

The main sending countries in the first five months of 2022 are the United Kingdom (with almost 4.7 million tourists and an annual increase of 3,424.2%), Germany (with more than 3.2 million, and an increase of 381, 0%) and France (with almost 3.1 million, 312.7% more).

DESTINATION AUTONOMOUS COMMUNITIES

The Balearic Islands was the first main destination for tourists in May, with 23.4% of the total. They are followed by Catalonia (21%) and Andalusia (14.9%).

More than 1.6 million tourists arrived at the Balearic Islands, 328.1% more than in May 2021. The main countries of residence of tourists from this community are Germany (with 33.2% of the total) and United Kingdom (29.4%).

The number of tourists visiting Catalonia increased by 482.7% and stood at around 1.5 million. 23.6% come from France and 11.5% from the United Kingdom.

The third main destination community by number of tourists is Andalusia, with one million tourists and an annual increase of 523.6%. The United Kingdom was the main country of origin (with 27.8% of the total), followed by France (10.8%).

In the rest of the communities, the number of tourists increased by 555.3% in the Community of Madrid, 459.2% in the Valencian Community and 447.4% in the Canary Islands.

In the accumulated of the first five months of 2021, the communities that received the most tourists are the Canary Islands (with 4.8 million and an increase of 810.4% compared to the same period of 2021), Catalonia (with 4.4 million and an increase 673.2%) and Andalusia (with 3.3 million, 772.0% more).

In terms of spending, the main destination autonomous communities with the greatest weight in tourist spending in May were the Balearic Islands (with 22.6% of the total), Catalonia (18.5%) and the Canary Islands (15.3%). ).

Tourist spending increased by 360% in the annual rate in the Balearic Islands, 602.9% in Catalonia and 447.5% in the Canary Islands. The rest of the main destination communities for tourists show positive annual variation rates.

In the first five months of 2022, the main destination communities with the highest accumulated spending are the Canary Islands (with 25.8% of the total), Catalonia (16.4%) and Andalusia (13.9%).

ARRIVAL AND ACCOMMODATION

The airport route is the one that served as the entrance to the largest number of tourists in May, with nearly 6.1 million, which represents an annual increase of 519.6%. By rail, 71.3% more tourists arrived, by road 117.3% and by port 1,897.4% more.

The number of tourists who used market accommodation as their main mode of accommodation in May increased by 496.4% in the annual rate. Within this type, hotel accommodation grew by 544.8% and rental housing by 277.6%.

For its part, non-market accommodation increased by 167.7%. Tourists staying in the homes of relatives or friends rose by 240.0% and those staying in owned homes by 112.6%.

68.9% of total spending in May was made by tourists who stayed overnight in hotel accommodation, with an annual increase of 630.3%. For its part, spending on non-market accommodation grew by 195%.

The expenditure of tourists who do not travel with a tourist package (which represents 74.3% of the total) rose by 393.4% in the annual rate. That of those who hire a tour package increased by 998.7%. In May, 5.2 million tourists traveled without a tourist package, which represents an annual increase of 334.3%. Almost 1.8 million arrived with a tourist package, 974.2% more.

Leisure, recreation and holidays is the main reason for the trip to Spain for 5.9 million tourists in May, which represents an annual increase of 487.5%. Tourists who visited Spain for leisure generated 84.5% of total spending (with a disbursement 574.4% higher than in May 2021).
