Garachico fires a former mayor

Garachico fire to Pascual Gonzalez Regaladomayor of the town between 1966 and 1969, official chronicler, outstanding artist and Favorite son of Villa y Puerto since 2015 “for his political, professional, pedagogical and artistic achievements”, which make him “one of the people who left the greatest mark on the present and future generations of this municipality”. He passed away this Monday, May 23 at the age of 89.

Jose Fernando Diaz Medinaofficial chronicler of Icod de los Vinos and president of the Board of Official Chroniclers of the Canary Islands, recalls his figure: «Esteban Pascual Gonzalez Regalado was born in La Quinta (San Pedro de Daute, in Garachico) on August 3, 1932. Son of Pascual González Navarro and Carmen Regalado Gil. The baptismal waters were administered to him on October 19 of the same year, by the priest Francisco Segovia Hernández, parish priest of the Church of San Pedro de Daute».

“He studied high school at the Cabrera Pinto Institute of La Laguna. Diploma in Industrial and Architectural Drafting with outstanding qualification with honorable mention. From a very young age he has collaborated with the Tenerife press, publishing hundreds of historical and current articles in the newspapers EL DÍA and La Tarde. Professor of Drawing by opposition of the San Marcos Vocational Training Workshop-School and the Free College Adopted in Icod of the Wines. Official Chronicler of the Villa and Port of Garachico. Mayor-President of Garachico. A prestigious watercolor and pen painter, he exhibited his work in numerous galleries in the Canary Islands and the Republic of Venezuela. He has been the author of the heraldic shields of Canarian municipalities such as San Miguel de Abona, Tegueste, Santiago del Teide, Villa and Port of Garachico, La Guancha, El Tanque, Mazo and La Frontera. He has also made the flags of La Guancha, Garachico, Tegueste, San Miguel de Abona, Santiago del Teide, La Frontera or Icod de los Vinos», details Diaz Medina.

Pascual González, who currently resides in Cross portwas a very versatile man: mayor, councilor, chronicler, writer, painter, draftsman, teacher, sculptor, heraldist, leader of the CD Gara and the Tenerife Football Federation, and collaborator in the press and radio.

His artistic imprint will be forever in Garachico, as he is the author of the monument to Simon Bolivarof the monolith of the 75th anniversary of the granting of the title of Villa, of the commemorative obelisk of the third centenary of the Garachico volcanic eruption, of the monolith of the fourth centenary of the invocation of San Roque and his commemorative medal, and the sculptures Pez and Pescadera, also in the Villa and Puerto. In addition, he was the designer of commemorative medals and logos for entities such as the Commonwealth of the North of Tenerife or the City Council of Santiago del Teide.

In his brief career as head of his native municipality, he achieved milestones such as the conditioning of the natural pools of El Caletonthe creation of the Center for Initiatives and Tourism (CIT), the first phase of the maritime avenue, the arrival of electricity to The Mountainthe asphalting plan for the streets of Garachico, the reform of the castle square, the second phase of the restoration of the castle of San Miguel, the start of work on the municipal swimming pool or the reconstruction of the soccer field, destroyed by a storm in 1966.

The current mayor of Garachico, Jose Heriberto Gonzalez (CC), underlines that «he was an extraordinary person, affable, always ready to collaborate with Garachico in whatever way he could. He gave his art for free to the City Council on many occasions. In his farewell we must highlight his tireless desire to collaborate with this municipality ». The municipality plans to pay him a posthumous tribute soon.
