The City Council of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, through the concessionaire company Valoriza SA, continues to improve the results of the domestic waste collection service in 2022, thus highlighting the 17.4% increase in organic matter in March. This waste exceeds 85,000 kilos recovered, with an increase of more than 12 tons compared to that collected in the month of February.
The Councilor for Public Services, Carlos Tarife, according to these data from March, values the campaign for the selective separation of organic matter that the city council is carrying out and, on the other hand, highlights that the collection of recyclable waste increases by 9 .6%, both in the 361,060 kilos of paper and cardboard waste and in the 250,800 kilos of light packaging.
On the other hand, the collection of healthcare waste increased compared to previous months, specifically 4.9% more than in February. “The management of this waste is a responsibility of our society for the benefit of protecting public health and the environment,” says Tarife.
On the other hand, in terms of recovered furniture and household goods, 277,920 kilos were reached, a decrease of 9.3% compared to last month. The councilor clarifies that this statistic includes both those that are dumped in an uncontrolled manner and those collected at the City Council service, thanks to the fact that the residents of the municipality have requested it by previously calling 922 224 849.
In addition, 45,310 kilos of organic vegetable waste have been collected, 51.5% more than in February, from biodegradable waste such as vegetable remains that are removed in daily cleaning, which enhances energy and resource savings for disposal , while contributing to the reuse of raw materials.
Tarife also distinguishes that this month 9,400 kilos of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) have been collected, 93.4% more than last month.
The service recovered 2,112 liters of used oil in March, thus adding a total of 6,951 liters collected so far this year. Carlos Tarife explained that the collection of oil is increasingly becoming an indicator to which it is intended to aspire together with the rest of the waste to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the 2030 Agenda.
Finally, after the fall of the waste deposited in the gray container or the rest fraction last month, in March 5.9 million kilos have been reached. “The firm commitment of both institutions and citizens to reduce the remainder shows a great advance towards a more sustainable city”, declares the mayor.
