Damián Pérez Viera left the Mayor’s Office yesterday, after almost 11 years with the baton. Sergio Mendez

As DIARIO DE AVISOS announced, Damián Pérez Viera left yesterday as mayor of Fasnia after 10 years and eight months in office, after winning the municipal elections of 2011, 2015 and 2019 with an absolute majority, under the initials of the PSOE.

Pérez Viera left the baton, explaining, in the plenary session on taking notice of the resignation, that he is doing it to recover “family and health”, and in his farewell he had words of praise for municipal workers and councilors, to whom he thanked “the enormous effort in very adverse situations”.

In addition, he valued the involvement of the neighbors in “maintaining the traditions” and even had words for the opposition (four councilors of CC) “in their auditing work, from which one must always learn.” He finished his words, within his usual modesty, asking forgiveness “for all those mistakes I have made in these almost 11 years”, although he leaves with one of his great objectives, the rehabilitation of the Los Roques coastline, finally underway.

After the farewell speech, which ended in tears, the first deputy mayor, Silvia María Tejera Felipe, adjourned the session and remained as accidental mayor until she is elected on Tuesday, after consensus among the seven socialist councillors, Luis Javier González Delgado as the new alderman, just the day he turns 35. The local assembly will endorse that agreement tomorrow.

The former mayor was supported by a large group of neighbors, as well as by the president of Fecam and mayor of Candelaria, Mari Brito.
