The Natural Environment and Security area of the Cabildo de Tenerife will provide the fishermen’s associations of the island with pools so that they can deposit the sea turtles that they find during their work and need to be attended to due to some type of condition.
The Fauna service of the Cabildo will distribute these containers in Garachico, Icod de los Vinos, Puerto de la Cruz, Punta del Hidalgo, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Candelaria, Granadilla, Arona and Guía de Isora, as specified by the island corporation on Thursday.
Last year, the La Tahonilla Wildlife Recovery Center collected 91 sea turtles for various reasons, the institution has specified.
Given the large number of sea turtles that are entangled, entangled in plastic, with hooks stuck, injured or with some type of condition, the Cabildo intends to inform not only the group of fishing professionals, but also diving clubs, groups of students and maritime leisure companies so that they know the correct way to act in case of finding a specimen with any of these symptoms, pointed out the Minister of Natural Environment Management, Isabel García.
Due to this “we want to provide these groups with some tools so that, in the event of collecting an affected turtle specimen, it can be deposited on hold until the staff of the Wildlife Recovery Center arrives,” he added.
This work is being carried out jointly by the staff of La Tahonilla and the marine biologist Claudia Hurtado, who is developing a project to educate citizens in good practices when interacting with turtles.
The initiative consists of placing deposits in the shade and in good condition on the docks of the municipalities, easily recognizable with the logo of the Cabildo de Tenerife and the telephone number of the La Tahonilla Wildlife Recovery Center.
In this way, the fishing professionals can deposit in them the specimens that need to be attended to and the Fauna team of the Cabildo will go to pick them up as soon as possible to transfer them to the center and start their recovery.
