The mayor of Arona prioritizes the Hospital del Sur before the train

José Julián Mena, socialist mayor of Arona. GIVES

The mayor of Arona, the socialist José Julián Mena, yesterday made public his position that, “in front of the development of the trainthe priority for the municipality and the southern region should be the public hospitalwhich has to be completed to improve the living conditions of our neighbors”.

“Infrastructure such as the train is being prioritized on the political agenda when what we should think about is finishing once and for all what we have started and that is vital, such as the complete development of the hospital or the health centers that are needed. and that, in the case of Arona, are those of Las Galletas and Los Cristianos”, recalled the mayor, who has been expressing himself in the same terms during this mandate.

In his opinion, “there are actions that are urgent and that have been waiting years for decisions to be made. In terms of mobility, the key lies in the accesses to Los Cristianos and the Guaza area, which must be resolved if what is wanted is to decongest the TF-1 motorway. They are cheaper and more sustainable solutions, without the environmental damage that the train would cause”.

The mayor of Arona also defended that, “in addition to addressing the accesses to both towns, it is necessary to rethink the direct connection from the highway with the Hospital del Sur, as well as the proposal to bury Chayofita Avenue and its connection with the TF- one. To this must be added the construction of a transport interchange on the first of these roads”.

According to Mena, “by solving the mobility problem in Los Cristianos and the proper fit between the port and the city, we will be addressing one of the obstacles that traffic on the highway currently encounters, which is urgent”. Likewise, he recalled that “it is inefficient to propose a train that will take decades to complete, with a significant environmental impact and whose effectiveness is questionable.” Likewise, he maintains that “the prices of public transport from the metropolitan area and its frequency should also be considered, so that its use is generalized.”

Angel Victor Torres

Contrary to what Pedro Martín, president of the Cabildo, and José Julián Mena, president of the Government of the Canary Islands, think, the also socialist Ángel Víctor Torres, is in favor of guided transport on the islands of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. “Trains are good means of transportation that are used in large cities, they allow not to consume more land, they are an alternative to the car and the bus and they can be sustainable from an environmental point of view,” said Torres, making it clear that he respects the autonomy of the Cabildo de Tenerife.

Casimiro Curbelo considers “a clumsy” to oppose the South train

Casimiro Curbelo, president of the Cabildo de La Gomera, as well as defending the port of Fonsalía to improve the connectivity of the western islands, is in favor of the construction of the southern train. “It is a political clumsiness of those who, faced with the possibility of improving communications throughout the south of Tenerife, say no to the train. It is clear that they do not know the suffering that the neighbors of the South have and those of us who arrive from other islands at peak times, ”he said yesterday on Onda Tenerife. “I would recommend that they make the decision all together to improve the mobility of Tenerife,” he said. In addition, he added that “the South train makes more sense than the Gran Canaria train, because it not only benefits Tenerife, but also connects La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro”, recalling that “the population has grown, the resident and the tourist one, and we already have as many cars as inhabitants, without the infrastructures having grown at the same level”.
