The Garachico Town Hall has just started the work to reform the La Caleta de Interián soccer field, partially closed since 2017 due to problems in the stability of a wall, with the aim of recovering the practice of soccer in the municipality after almost four years without any facilities available for soccer 11. The last great maritime storm, in November 2018, destroyed the field of the historic center, headquarters of the historic RCD Gara, and left this team and the Interian Sports Youth (now without equipment) without any available playing field in the municipal area. Since then, around 70 athletes, between minors and adults, have had to train and compete in The Silos and, since last year, at least training in a piece of the Caleta countryside, after the technicians certified that its partial use was safe.
The field of La Caleta It has been possible to use it for football 7 matches, but football 11, which is practiced from the children’s category, has been condemned to exile since November 2018 due to the complications derived from the work in this secondary field. The risk of a wall collapse and part of the playing field has prevented its use normally.
Mayor, José Heriberto González (CC), has celebrated this week the beginning of the works that will allow “to fine-tune the entire soccer field of La Caleta de Interián”. The Tenerife Council initially invested 125,000 euros there, to which the City Council now adds 40,000 euros more of its own funds to be able to put it into use “in a short time.”
An investment of 165,000 euros will make it possible for the matches 11 against 11 to return to La Caleta de Interián
Until the end of 2020, Garachico had to endure a total closure of its two facilities for soccer practice. The partial opening of La Caleta It was a relief for the around 40 boys and girls who form the basis of RCD Gara. For the 24 players of the regional category team, playing at home means, since the end of 2018, playing at the Juan Valiente stadium, in the neighboring town of Los Silos. The Interian Sports Youth has run out of equipment.
The Garachico Town Hall It is not proposed that the old field of the helmet ceases to be a public parking lot. The decision made in February 2019 seems to have no turning back. The Cabildo de Tenerife and the Garachico City Council announced then that the emblematic soccer field would be moved, after 95 years of constant struggle with the sea, which has destroyed it more than a dozen times. The last two in April 2003 and November 2018. Two years ago, the insular Government of Carlos Alonso (CC) announced that 400,000 euros would be invested in the construction of the new soccer field in Garachico on the outskirts of the town, next to the San Pedro neighborhood, in the part of the La Quinta Roja farm that is located below the TF-42 highway. That idea has been put on hold and, for now, the only facility available in Garachico for soccer practice will be the La Caleta field.
