The Tacoronte Farmer’s Market, located in the neighborhood of San Juan Since 1981, it returns this Saturday, January 8, 2022 to its usual headquarters after six weeks moving in forced by works. The action carried out to renovate the roof, which had elements with asbestos, and the pavement left no alternative but to move all the stalls selling agricultural and livestock products to a temporary tent since last November 27, 2021 until the second Saturday of January 2022.

The good progress of the works and the proximity of the provisional location, located right in front of the facilities, have allowed the transfer to be carried out quickly and agilely. Market customers will find this Saturday a new space with 87 seats distributed in a more comfortable and orderly way, brighter, cleaner, with non-slip flooring and a completely renovated asbestos-free roof.

The roof is now made up of sandwich-type panels, which in the upper part imitates a roof and in the lower part is white, which will allow the entire room to gain luminosity and clarity, also thanks to a new, more efficient lighting system.

The reform was financed with 250,000 euros by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands

This reform was approved since 2020, but was delayed until the end of 2021 due to the collateral effects of the coronavirus pandemic, as recognized by the mayor of Tacoronte, José Daniel Díaz (NC). In his opinion, the action was essential due to the deterioration of the roof and the need to remove the corrugated iron and asbestos sheets, which were installed 40 years ago. A delicate job that required the intervention of a company specialized in handling these polluting and carcinogenic materials by inhalation.

The project has been financed by the Ministry of Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands with 250,000 euros. Budget that has allowed the total replacement of the roof, the renovation of the floor with non-slip material, the cleaning of the structure so that it presents a better appearance, the replacement of the luminaires and the painting in lighter colors of the entire structure.

Jose Daniel Diaz He assured yesterday that the execution of this work “obeys fundamentally to the insistence of the Municipal Group of Nueva Canarias in the City Council of Tacoronte and the support shown by the regional Minister of Economy and Finance, Roman Rodriguez (NC), so that this performance was finally a reality ».

«Thanks to this push, it has been possible to bring a necessary change to one of our benchmark activities in the Canary Islands which, in addition, has already celebrated the 40th anniversary of its founding. Now we have more comfortable facilities for the farmers themselves and for the customers, with a finish that brings more light and an organization of the space that will make it easier to shop at our market, ”Díaz says.

According to the data it handles the Town Hall of Tacoronte, the market receives around 5,000 visitors every weekend, between Saturday and Sunday, “but always with the application of health and distance measures due to the pandemic as has been applied during the last two years.” Its opening hours are, every Saturday and Sunday of the year, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Since 1981

The Tacoronte Farmer’s Market was founded in 1981 to respond to the need of farmers in the Tacoronte-Acentejo region to sell their agricultural production at more advantageous prices for the farmer, by dispensing with the figure of the intermediary, in a direct way and in a space managed by the group itself. Its promoters emphasize that the opening in the 80s of the 20th century contributed to the diversification of the primary sector in the area, which until then was much more focused on vineyards and potatoes. Horticulture was increased and lands that were abandoned or that had a much more limited production were put into operation. By gaining profitability, production grew and the Tacoronte Farmer’s Market became a reference space in the North for the direct acquisition of local products at their stalls.
