SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Jan. 3 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands has published on the Electronic Notice Board the resolution by which a direct aid valued at 10 million is granted to holders of agricultural holdings for the cultivation of tomato, cucumber, zucchini, pumpkin and watermelon affected by the consequences of the health crisis.

The autonomous department has increased aid in certain lines of the decree law that regulates the direct granting of subsidies for the Covid for the agri-food sector and amounts to 21.6 million. Therefore, in the case of tomatoes and cucumbers affected by the health crisis, it has increased by 3.3 million euros to complete the 8.3 million in aid for these two crops.

This is a total of 469 applicants who have been able to access a grant that allows compensation for the losses that producers and companies may have incurred until December 31, 2021.

The serious situation created by the impact of the covid-19 on the agri-food sector has been of the utmost urgency for the adoption of extraordinary economic management measures to mitigate the effects of the abrupt decrease in activity, in order to remedy the results negative and sustained effects of the current crisis.

The Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alicia Vanoostende, has indicated that 2020 “has been a difficult year for the horticultural sector due to the lack of liquidity as a result of the paralysis of trade and restoration due to the pandemic.”

“We are aware of the importance of tomato and cucumber cultivation for the Canary Islands, more specifically for the municipality of La Aldea de San Nicolás (Gran Canaria), and for this reason we will continue to support a vital sector for the islands, just as we did for avoid losing aid due to Brexit or increasing aid to the area per hectare to 24,000 euros, “added the counselor.
