“Since 2003, 1,118 women have been murdered in Spain, which is a higher figure than the victims of ETA. Since 2013, 44 minors have died and 330 have been orphaned. This year there have been 37 murders, of which eight had previous complaints. Five minors have been murdered, including the two girls from Tenerife, and 24 have been orphaned ”. These figures were provided yesterday by the Government delegate in the Canary Islands, Anselmo Pestana, during the presentation of the initiatives that the Government Delegation has launched throughout the Archipelago on the occasion of the 25N, International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women .
“This year, in particular, we have redoubled our efforts in the line of seeking new ways of access to Canarian society, particularly the youngest. Starting from the idea that there can be no protection if the administrations are not aware of the cases, we wanted to focus on transferring the message to the street that there is a whole world of public resources available, confidential and secure, ”explained Pestana . Among the novelties of this year, the Delegation will launch the campaign The circle that protects you through a video with which it intends to reach all social areas to inform about the access routes to public resources to protect victims of Gender Violence and their children.
Dissemination through social networks
This video will be disseminated through different channels, including social networks, and will also be used in awareness days that the Coordination Unit against Violence against Women of the Government Delegation will carry out in the educational field and in the training of personnel involved in the protection of victims. Added to this is the installation of the so-called violet dots in the libraries of the Canary Islands, an initiative that will be presented at the State Library in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria on Thursday, 25N.
It involves the installation of violet identification points in the most visible areas of libraries, from where, through a QR code, it is possible to access information from the Ministry of Equality on action guidelines for victims and witnesses of sexist aggressions or relatives or friends of victims of Gender Violence. “There are the mechanisms to know how to protect the victims.”
On the other hand, the Menina Awards will be delivered in a ceremony on Friday. After the pandemic last year, it is recovered to grant the recognitions that the Delegation grants to people and institutions in the Canary Islands for their work in the fight against sexist violence. In 2021 they have been awarded to: The association VIVAS Mujeres Canarias de la Comunicación; Olivia Estévez Santana, former councilor of the City Council of La Oliva, former councilor of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and former deputy of the Parliament of the Canary Islands; José Juan Casañas Vargas, head of the Local Police of Santiago del Teide (Tenerife); the crew of the oceanographic vessel Ángeles Alvariño; and to the Organic Unit of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (UOPJ).
Since 2003, 1,118 women have been murdered in Spain, a higher number than the victims of ETA
To these recognitions are added the already traditional awards of the Canary Islands Pictorial Contest for Gender Equality, which for the fourth consecutive year is convened by the Delegation for Primary Education students from all the islands, and which will be delivered on Monday, November 29. The Coordination Unit against Violence against Women has also organized an exhibition of the different posters with the awareness campaigns against Violence that the national Government has carried out in recent years and that is already exhibited at the headquarters of the Delegation of the Government in Las Palmas and that, in an itinerant way, will be exhibited in different centers and educational institutions of all the islands. On La Palma, this exhibition will hit the streets through totem poles installed on public roads, which, after having been exhibited in Santa Cruz, can be seen this week, until Friday, in the municipalities of San Andrés and Sauces.
The Delegation has also signed with the town councils a series of collaboration protocols between the State Security Forces and Bodies and the Local Police. After that of last week in Valverde and El Pinar (El Hierro), on Tuesday 30 a new protocol will be signed in Vega de San Mateo for the accession of the Gran Canaria municipality to the VioGén System that the State put into operation in 2007 to allow monitoring and fast, comprehensive and effective protection of battered women and their children. With this municipality, the Delegation will have already reached 75% of those covered by the protection network for victims of Violence.
Since 2013 44 minors have died and 330 have been orphaned, 24 of them this year
Tomorrow, in addition, to the consular body in the Canary Islands and representatives of different religious confessions in the Archipelago, the Guide to the Rights of Victims of Gender Violence of the Ministry of Equality will be delivered, aimed at both Spanish and foreigners and available in different languages. Among the events for 25N is also the traditional minute of silence and reading of the manifesto against Violence that will take place simultaneously on all the islands on Thursday at 12 noon, as well as the placement of a commemorative banner in the different headquarters of the Delegation in the Islands.
