This was said yesterday by the director of Ports of Tenerife, Javier Mora, after the meeting of the Arona Port-City Commission – made up of representatives of the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the municipality–, which met yesterday morning in the South. Mora also recalled the commission carried out by the Government of the Canary Islands to the two Canarian universities and the Independent Authority for Fiscal Responsibility (AIReF) to prepare a series of complete evaluation reports on the existing alternatives to choose the best option for maritime communication with La Palma , La Gomera and El Hierro, studies whose results “will have to be taken into account.”
This document arises as a result of the opposition to the construction of the Port of Fonsalía as an alternative to that of Los Cristianos for the maritime traffic of passengers and goods between the Green Islands. Among these variants is the use of the ports of Granadilla de Abona and Santa Cruz.
However, the port director also influenced the need to “share and agree on actions with the Arona City Council to optimize the transition between the port and the city.” In this regard, the mayor, José Julián Mena, wanted to make it clear that “we are not going to give up the port of Los Cristianos.” The councilor recalled that the Consistory he presides has already spoken out against the expansion of the Los Cristianos dock.
Within the framework of the Port-City Commission, the Port Authority proceeded to present the proposal for the Delimitation of the Port Spaces and Uses of the Los Cristianos dock (DEUP), which already has the approval of the Board of Directors of this body public attached to State Ports, of the Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda.
Optimize the use and give up land
With this document, the port authority «seeks to optimize the use of the port areas of Los Cristianos and, above all, of those destined to attend the connection needs between the islands of the province, as well as to favor the necessary port-city interaction ”.
The DEUP will submit, shortly, to the public information and consultation procedure. It adjusts the land surface and water surface that the Port Authority of Tenerife considers necessary for the development of port activities, while releasing those that it understands that they are no longer necessary, but that continue to be under its control. In this sense, the proposal for the Delimitation of the Port Spaces and Uses of the Los Cristianos dock proposes to free a total of 4,773 square meters.
Among the most outstanding aspects of the document, the Port Authority of Santa Cruz de Tenerife mentions as relevant the proposal for the disposal of an area of 2,400 square meters located in the extreme north of the service area, in what is the closest location to the urban nucleus and where no port uses are currently being developed. It is about land to be released in order to proceed to its transfer to the city.
