Volcanic eruption on La Palma
SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE, Sep 21 (EUROPA PRESS) –
The psychologist and director of the European Institute of Positive Psychology, Juan Nieto, has pointed out that the catastrophe of the volcano has plunged the population of the island of La Palma into a vital crisis full of uncertainty, anguish and even “emotional shock”. In this situation of overflowing emotions, of emotional ups and downs, “it is important to be accompanied and that there is a channeling of all these feelings at the moment they appear”, he points out.
Juan Nieto recommends that people use all those emotional resources that in other convulsive situations of life have been able to work and calm them at least momentarily and, “above all, lean on others: neighbors, siblings, the community itself and even on all those people (firefighters, policemen …) who are helping them.
“Later, they will have to undergo a grieving process where they will have to count the losses that, even though they are material, the emotional involvement will be very high and they will have to face reconstruction and emotional recovery,” he adds.
Right now, in his opinion, there is great uncertainty about the fate of their homes or businesses. “Uncertainty is one of the most complicated emotions (the brain needs certainty to move forward and close stages) and in this case of a catastrophe we are talking about uncertainty that prevents completely starting that stage of mourning in the first phase. Once everything is over, We need to put our ideas and feelings in order to be able to step firmly and rebuild ourselves in the next stage, “he concludes.
