Laura Castro referred to the fact that it is a work «important and highly anticipated by the population of the area. It “will not only be a notable improvement for the promenade, but also for the adjacent streets.” In the opinion of the island director, this project will make this area “an attraction for the local population and for tourists, who will have a new enclave where they can stroll and enjoy the coastal environment.”
One of the aspects highlighted by Castro was “the fluid communication” that has existed between the Tourism Service of the Council and the El Pueblito Neighborhood Association of Las Caletillas, an aspect confirmed by the parties. He assured that “this will continue to be the case during the intervention, in order to solve any incident or doubt that the neighbors believe is of interest to communicate.”
The Mayor of Candelaria values as “great news for our municipality” the start of the improvement works on the Paseo de Graciliano. María Concepción Brito emphasizes that “one of our main objectives is the regeneration of the coastline”, something that is fulfilled with this project “which will contribute to revitalize and rehabilitate this stretch of the coastline”.
A participatory project
Brito highlights the intense work and coordination between the Tourism Department of the Canary Islands Government, the Cabildo and the City Council of Candelaria to develop this project, “which has been participatory, with a very active role on the part of the El Pueblito Neighborhood Association.” The mayor recalls that “now begins the period of works, which will generate unavoidable annoyances to the residents of the area, but the results of which will lead to a notable improvement in their immediate surroundings, so we appeal to your understanding.”
At the meeting, the technician of the Tourism Service of the Island Corporation, Javier Ramos, explained to the attendees how the work will develop, which will be carried out in phases and that it will have an execution period of fourteen months, with a budget of 1.9 million.
The financing to carry out the intervention comes from the Ministry of sightseeing of the Government of the Canary Islands, under the agreement for the Rehabilitation of Infrastructures and Equipment in Tourist Zones –signed with the Secretary of State for Tourism–, and the Cabildo de Tenerife is the Administration responsible for developing and completing the tender and awarding the works , through the Territory Planning, Historical Heritage and Tourism area.
Among the works, which will be carried out by the company Copisa Constructora Pirenaica, SA, the improvement and conditioning of the streets adjacent to the Graciliano Ruiz Rodríguez promenade and the Semidán road are contemplated, which includes pedestrianization or restricted access for part of these sites, as well as the relocation of car parks.
Likewise, the adaptation to the accessibility regulations of Acaymo, Agarfa, Amiche and Garoé streets; the resurfacing of the entire area, the planting of new vegetation, the replacement of the supply, sanitation and irrigation network and the installation of new public lighting.
A profound change
With an investment of 1,884,072 euros, the action to be carried out on the Paseo de Graciliano will not only make it possible to take advantage of the elevation difference to achieve a broader view of the horizon, reinterpreting the cross section between the town and the sea, but will also provide the leisure area by the sea, a playground, sports and fishing areas, terraces for shops and access to the ocean. It is a global intervention to adapt the entire environment.
