La Gomera remembers the 20 deceased from the forest fire of 1984

SAN SEBASTIÁN DE LA GOMERA, Sep 11 (EUROPA PRESS) –

The Cabildo de La Gomera has paid tribute this Saturday to the 20 fatalities of the forest fire that affected the island in 1984, also devastating some 900 hectares.

In a statement, the Insular Corporation has indicated that in memory of the deceased 37 years ago it has placed wreaths of flowers in the monument raised in their memory at the foot of Roque Agando and in the Municipal Cemetery of San Sebastián.

On September 11, 1984, a fire broke out in the La Laja area that reached the surrounding area of ​​Roque Agando, where 20 people died –13 from La Gomera and seven from Tenerife–, mostly young people who acted as volunteers. in extinction, including among the victims the civil governor of the time, Francisco Afonso.

For its part, the monument erected in memory of the victims is a work of the sculptor José Abad, who made it in steel including an indicative panel with the name of all the deceased.
