Bollullo beach will be reopened for public use the first weekend in September. On a temporary basis, from Monday to Friday it will be from 3:00 p.m., because mornings are reserved to complete the work carried out on the cliff, a fact that could occur in a month, says the municipal government of La Orotava.
Access to this bathing area in El Rincón was closed to public use on July 2, due to the danger generated by a large rockfall. The closure was necessary to carry out the conditioning, sanitation and improvement works on the cliff, and to guarantee the safety of the users.
After the inspection of the area by the technicians, the La Orotava City Council proceeded to declare the work to repair and secure the cliff an emergency. The municipal government recalls that the start of the works took place “barely 48 hours later” (on July 5), counting on a company specialized in carrying out vertical works.
From the first moment, work has been done permanently in the area, with the aim of opening the beach as soon as possible. However, the complications of the terrain and the condition of the cliff itself have meant that the work has dragged on in time, extending more than the technicians had originally anticipated.
In the initial actions focused on the sanitation and the revision of the entire cliff, it was necessary to incorporate a measure that is considered essential to ensure the environment, the installation of protection meshes at various points. The objective is to guarantee the safety of the path that serves as access to the Bollullo beach.
The Orotavian City Council came to consider the reopening of the accesses to this enclave in the middle of this month, due to the idea it was postponed until next weekend as a result of the decision of the technicians to increase the area to be protected. “For this reason, it was not possible to restore access in this month of August,” clarify from the local government.
Thoughtful decision
It was during the technical meeting to monitor the works that took place this week when it was considered feasible to open the path and the Bollullo beach to the public “with guarantees” and in a few days, although the works will continue in the zone for at least one more month. It should be remembered that, in addition, it has been necessary to replace the railings to access the beach, as well as part of the path that was interrupted due to the fall of large stones.
The Bollullo beach is the most frequented in the municipality of La Orotava, which has more than 42,000 inhabitants. At present, with the Los Patos beach closed since July 2013 and with the work on the staircase pending reactivation, the municipality maintains only the El Ancón beach operational. It is the El Rincón cove furthest from the main roads and the one with the greatest parking deficiencies.
