Tenerife Hosts the Largest Conference on Water Desalination and Reuse

The Secretaries of State for Environment and for Agriculture and Food will inaugurate the 14th International Congress of the Spanish Association of Desalination and Reuse (AEDyR), which will take place on the 24th and 25th of this month at the Adán Martín Auditorium. The most important association in Spain for water treatment and management, founded in 1998 and with many member groups, has chosen Tenerife as a national benchmark to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the installation in Lanzarote of the country’s first desalination plant. The event will address, among other topics over two days, the latest innovations in desalination and reuse, the application of Artificial Intelligence, the circular economy, and clean energies.

First Event

Hugo Morán and Begoña García Bernal will lead the first event of this forum along with the president of the Council of Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, and the councilors of the Government of the Canary Islands Manuel Miranda and Narvay Quintero, in addition to the president of the association, Domingo Zarzo.

Extensive Program

The 14th Congress of AEDyR is planned to develop an extensive program with more than a hundred presentations and debates where national and international experts will address the major challenges of the sector. There will also be spaces for networking and leisure. A gala dinner where the congress awards and the AEDyR AWARDS will be presented will close the event. In parallel, the 2nd Technological Salon of Desalination and Reuse will allow prominent companies to showcase their cutting-edge services or products.

Workshop

On the eve of the Congress, on the afternoon of the 23rd, the Water-Energy Nexus Workshop–Sol2H2O Project will be held. This will address the role of new technologies in the industrial water cycle from the perspective of the water-energy nexus and evaluate the limitations for its industrial and market development. The workshop is organized by the Technological Institute of the Canary Islands (ITC) and the Solar Platform of Almeria–CIEMAT. Sol2H2O is a project coordinated by the University of Évora (Portugal), along with partners from Palermo (Italy) and the aforementioned entities, which have extensive experience in research infrastructures at the European level in the development of wastewater treatment and water production technologies driven by solar energy. The capacity is limited, and pre-registration is required to participate.

Center in Adeje

As a complementary activity to the Congress, on the morning of Friday the 27th, the inauguration of the WAVE Innovation and Development Center, located in Adeje, next to the Seawater Desalination Plant (EDAM) of La Caleta, will take place. Registration is free.  This center, promoted by Aqualia in collaboration with Entemanser and the Adeje Town Hall, is envisioned as a reference platform in R&D+i in desalination, brine recovery, and renewable energies, promoting public-private collaboration and the advancement of sustainable solutions in the comprehensive water cycle.

Relevance

The 14th AEDyR Congress is the most important event in the water desalination and reuse sector in 2025 in Spain and one of the most relevant worldwide. It is a key meeting for the exchange of knowledge and collaboration between administrations, research centers, and companies in the sector at a crucial time for the development of sustainable solutions against climate change and the scarcity of water resources.

Collective

AEDyR was formed to bring together all the agents involved in water desalination and reuse. It defends and represents small and large engineering firms; service companies; component manufacturers; universities and research centers; public administrations, and professionals in the field. The associated companies are present in more than 20 countries to supply millions of inhabitants.
