The urban centre of Güímar is set to feature 450 public parking spaces located in Tasagaya and the commercial district, at both the northern and southern ends of the town. Of these, 350 will shape the car park that the City Council plans to establish following the cleaning, clearing, and preparation of the 6,727 square metres of land acquired in the service area, while 100 spaces will be created from the old Mercadona facilities on Bishop Pérez Cáceres Avenue. The mayor, Gustavo Pérez, asserts that “in a month’s time we will address one of the city’s major concerns, which is the parking violation issue.”
On June 1, the rental agreement, secured through tender, will cover 6,849 square metres divided into 1,700 of pre-conditioned parking and 5,000 of building. The total financial commitment amounts to 1,728,000 euros at a rate of 12,000 euros monthly for a duration of 12 years. This price encompasses outdoor car parks, underground parking, and a significant commercial unit comprising three sections: a warehouse with loading and unloading facilities, a multifunctional area, and an almost open-plan commercial space.
Services and Savings
The significance of leasing the premises lies in its capacity to centralise the storage of logistics, possessions, furniture and materials for events and infrastructure of the City Council, the development of classrooms, as well as workshops associated with training initiatives, alongside the garage for the municipal vehicle fleet, which has markedly expanded.
The local government contends that repurposing the former Mercadona for public use will yield additional advantages, such as accommodating the administrative offices for the Urban Solid Waste and Road Cleaning Collection Service, translating into direct savings on the current costs related to office rental (661 euros monthly) and another direct yet partial reduction in current expenditures for renting facilities for vehicles and tools.
Justification
The enhancement of active employment policies has resulted, over the past four years, in the addition of over 650 workers to municipal staffing in structural services. The local government believes this workspace would facilitate the coordination of day-to-day operations and ensure that contracted personnel are given optimal conditions for executing their tasks, fostering productivity and workplace satisfaction. Moreover, it will enhance both administrative and operational organisation, aligning with active employment policy goals aimed at improving job integration and professional development for workers. “This space will provide ongoing and specialised training for these employees.”
“With this land acquisition and the adaptation of parking areas, as well as the leasing of these properties, the City of Güímar not only addresses a long-standing community request but also progresses towards a more accessible, organised, and future-ready urban model,” explained the council member from Güímar.

The 6,727 square metres of the Tasagaya designated land spans from behind the Health Centre to Calle Secondino Delgado (behind the Civil Guard Barracks and the building housing a hypermarket) and Arístides Hernández Mora Street (in front of the old IES Mencey Acaymo).
“We have initiated two ambitious projects that address a historical need for the municipality: the expansion of public parking, sanctioning logistics and storage spaces, and the creation of municipal offices tailored to the growth of services and personnel,” stated Gustavo Pérez, who emphasised that these initiatives “also contribute to the town’s economic development.”
