The Cabildo de Tenerife has concluded the works on the channeling of the Ravine of the Shepherds along the Insular Highway TF-31, as it traverses Martiánez in the Municipality of Puerto de la Cruz.

This means that on Wednesday, all lanes of this vital route for both entering and exiting the tourist city will be accessible.

Source of Concern

The Ravine of the Shepherds, situated in the Martiánez area, has traditionally been a concern for local residents due to runoff and landslides that posed risks to the safety of the TF-31 road.

During periods of heavy rainfall, water cascaded down like a waterfall, transporting stones and sediment that rendered the roadway hazardous for approximately 20,000 to 25,000 vehicles and pedestrians, depending on the section and the season.

Channeling

This initiative is part of a hydraulic channeling project with a total investment of 800,000 euros, aimed at safely managing the rainwater that has historically led to closures and landslides in this area.

The technical strategy involved constructing a reinforced concrete frame that enables water to flow over the roadway and adjacent pedestrian walkways, thereby safeguarding the road and enhancing safety.

Commitment

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Rosa Dávila, highlights that this project “fulfils our commitment to the drivers who use this route, who have sought a solution for the landslides that have occurred in this crucial part of Puerto de la Cruz.”

Alongside improving road safety, Rosa Dávila noted that this intervention will positively influence the municipality’s economic and tourist activities.

“Puerto de la Cruz is a pivotal destination on the island, and the smooth flow of traffic is vital for both residents and visitors accessing the city. The reopening of the lane will enhance traffic fluidity and safety, benefiting local shops, transport services, and hotel establishments.”

Complex Work

The Insular Road Councillor, Dámaso Arteaga, explained that “the task has been intricate and required specialized efforts to ensure precision and minimise errors, considering the land’s characteristics and existing infrastructure.” He added that “only aesthetic works remain, which will not disrupt vehicular traffic.”

Arteaga noted that “we have improved a critical point in the island’s network, historically affected by runoff and flooding, significantly enhancing road safety in the vicinity.” He also expressed gratitude for public cooperation during the months of construction, commending the patience and understanding displayed during the process.

Meanwhile, the mayor of Puerto de la Cruz, Leopoldo Afonso, expressed appreciation to the Cabildo de Tenerife for undertaking the works. “The most crucial aspect is ensuring safety by effectively channeling the water from the Ravine of the Shepherds, thereby preventing greater risks like those we have encountered in previous years,” stated Afonso.
