Revitalizing the Shores of Tenerife: A Fresh Approach to Coastal Regeneration

The Insular Area of Tourism, External Action and Institutional Relations approved an agreement on Wednesday during the Governing Council meeting between the Insular Corporation and the Candelaria City Council for the execution of the works related to the project Regeneration of Las Caletillas Beach, which is part of the Tenerife and the Sea programme.

The total investment is 975,508 euros, with the Cabildo covering 85.63%, amounting to 835,361 euros, while the Candelaria Council will contribute the remaining 14.37%, which is 140,147 euros. The execution period for the project is set for 48 months, with the possibility of extension.

Comprehensive Transformation

Lope Afonso, Vice President and Insular Tourism Councillor, recalls the “recent completion of the new promenade” and notes that this action, along with the necessary authorisation from the General Directorate of Coasts, “completes the comprehensive transformation of this coastal front, enhancing the tourist appeal of the municipality and its resilience against climatic phenomena.”

This initiative aims to restore the natural state of this coastal enclave, which has been affected by the accumulation of pebbles and gravel in recent years. From 2012 to 2014, the beach of Las Caletillas saw a significant increase in pebbles and gravel of uncertain origin, which altered its profile and obstructed access to the water, especially for elderly individuals and those with limited mobility. This situation led to complaints from locals and users, who called for urgent remediation.

The Beach

Situated in a bay formed between the thermal power station (Punta de las Tosquillas) and Cabo de la Punta del Rey, this beach has a frontage of approximately 80 metres, adjacent to Cho Vito beach, which spans about 55 metres.

The project involves removing a metre of pebbles and gravel from Cho Vito Beach for screening and subsequent redistribution in the dry beach area. The surface material of the dry beach will be excavated to establish an 8% slope, facilitating access to the sea.

Crushing the existing material to obtain sand has been ruled out. The primary goal is to restore the beach profile to its natural state, as it was prior to the accumulation of pebbles. The adjacent seafront will be remodelled, with the installation of wooden decking serving as a sunbathing area.

This project aims to rejuvenate Las Caletillas beach, enhancing its attractiveness and functionality, and providing a comfortable and accessible space for all users. The initiative is designed to address the current issues faced by the beach.
