SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE APR. (Press Europa) –
The President of the Canary Islands Government, Fernando Clavijo, has criticised on Wednesday the “misleading and demagogic rhetoric” of the PSOE regarding restrictions on tourism, whilst the City Council of Adeje—whose mayor, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, is the president of the party—advocates for approximately 1,600 new accommodations and a golf course.
In response to an inquiry from the socialist group during the Parliamentary Plenary control session, he challenged the principal opposition party to prove their genuine commitment to limiting tourism by instructing Fraga to “halt” this project along with the ‘cradle of the soul’.
He urged the socialist spokesperson, Sebastián Franquis, to disengage from the “online” debate and instead support the initiatives of the Canary Islands government, which comprises 51 measures arising from the Conference of Presidents with an estimated value of €700 million, along with initiatives aimed at restricting property purchases by foreigners.
Clavijo also defended the advancement of the new Holiday Rental Law, reforms to the land legislation, and measures designed to accelerate housing construction. “We extend our hand to you, Add,” remarked Franquis.
Franquis asserted that the government “continues to back an unjust and unsustainable developmentalism” and reduced Clavijo to a “hollow figure” president who “does not lead, does not guide, and is merely a tool executing the commands of the PP.”
In his view, “governance requires courage and the exercise of genuine leadership.”
On the subject of the tourist strike, he noted that the president “responded too late and poorly,” claiming that “he has never believed in social dialogue,” pointing out that it has been a year and a half since a social consultation table was convened.
He mentioned that a year after the demonstrations of the 20A, the government “fails to engage” with society, unlike the PSOE, which “commits to limiting growth, redistributing wealth, and dignifying employment.”
