The Museum of History and Anthropology of Tenerife (Mhat), located at Lercaro House in La Laguna, recently welcomed an official delegation from San Antonio, Texas, led by its mayor, Ron Nirenberg, and the honorary consul of Spain, Steve Chicano.
This visit, arranged by the General Directorate of Emigration of the Government of the Canary Islands, forms part of a collaborative initiative aimed at recovering and promoting the historical connection of the Canaries with the foundation of San Antonio de Béjar.
The Minister of Culture and Museums of Tenerife, José Carlos Acha, noted in a statement that “the exchange has facilitated the enhancement of advice from Tenerife’s museum professionals for the establishment of the future El Alamo Museum in Texas, which will incorporate references to the island’s heritage in Texas’s history.”
In this context, he highlighted that the meeting is part of a cooperative effort to recover and recognise the essential role that the Canaries played in the establishment of San Antonio de Béjar.
Acha further emphasised that, through the diligent efforts of the museum’s technical team, “documents, artefacts, and crucial knowledge have been provided to reconstruct that event, thereby strengthening the historical and cultural connection between the Canary Islands and America.”
The initiative has also received support from the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and the City of Teguise, alongside guidance from the Ibero-American Museum of the Cabildo de Tenerife.
